Great for Sample Libraries
This thing is killer. Not a lot of options out there at the moment for 4x SSD external enclosures, but this one fits the bill nicely.I'm using it with a new Mac Pro to store sample libraries for orchestral composing. Blackmagic Disk Speed gives me ~350 MB/s read and write speed to a Crucial M4. I'm using it in JBOD mode at the moment - haven't tried RAIDing yet. Not sure I'll need to given the speed of the thing. I haven't tried a simultaneous read/write test to all 4 disks at once - that would be an interesting test I'd like to see. Could I get 350MB/s from all the disks at once? That would really be something!Build quality is great - lots of metal, very solid, and quite small (not deep). Looking forward to racking it up.The orange indicator light rings are great - I know when/which hard drives are getting accessed, and it adds a nice little bling factor. They're a nice and medium brightness, which is great, not glaring/blinding/ultra-bright LEDs like some budget electronics have.Only recommendation to Blackmagic would be to add some sort of suspension mechanism for holding up thinner SSDs - I have a 120GB drive in there that seems like it's torquing the connector downward a little bit. I just shoved a little rubber bumper underneath the drive which holds it up perfectly - would be nice to have some adjustable thing like this built-in, though. All in all, an excellent product! Blackmagic really has the industrial design thing down, my hat's off to the designers/engineers there.

Its great - but it really doesn't come with a power cord - so prepare for that!
This is a fantastic piece of hardware. It works great with my mac. I am using this to stream orchestral and piano sample libraries from Samsung 850 SSDs. I'm getting 380 mbs read speeds, which is fine for the sample libraries I am using thus far.Really well built piece of hardware.Don't be fooled by the picture on this amazon entry. That photo is of TWO UNITS sitting on top of one another, so that you can see the front and back of the unit. It is only one piece. So why the four starts instead of five? Because, as other reviews have also stated, this product does not come with a power cord. Seriously! A $500+ piece of hardware which comes in a nice box - with apple type packaging - great design - and you CANNOT use this out of the box. You have to go out and purchase a power cord first.Unfortunately, there is no other company making a piece of hardware to compete with this one. OWC has a thunderbolt SSD dock - but its not as nice as this one. But if someone ever makes a competing piece of hardware to this one, and they include a $6 power cord - buy that one.It is clear that Blackmagic cares deeply about their design. They want you to view their products as top of the line - so why they skimped on something so simple as a power cord is seriously beyond me.

Nice piece of gear works flawlessly Follow up.
Nice piece of gear works flawlessly. cost more then I like ,but blackmagic gear is pricey. For the price the warranty should be 2 or 3 years not 1 year.Still works fine I got tired of the lights so after 1 and a half years I opened it and unplugged the power to the leds. Much better now. I only wish this was 200 or 300 not the 500 plus it is. I run it to a mac mini this way I have multiple boot drives and clones and a time machine in it. With the new 2018 mac mini this may not work as the new 2018 mac mini uses usb-c/thunderbolt 3 . I am not going to buy a new mini due to this. I will be looking for a conversion cable so I can use this with the new mini before I get a new mini.

I own two of these Black Magic pieces.. ...
I own two of these Black Magic pieces... Very durable piece! I take this unit on the road and edit lots of audio and some video. Very fast! If I were going to nitpick I'd say the openings for the SSD carts seem a bit big. The drives can wobble. That may be more of an industry standard thing. If you are editing large blocks of content, recording and mixing audio/video or using the drives as huge sample or clip tanks... this thing gets it done!

Best SSD dock I know of
These units are great for anyone needing lots of fast disk access as in music sample playback. I now own three of them and want another. It will hold up to four SSDs so for about $1000. You can have four terabytes of very fast storage.

Great! Just give us a dang power cord.
So far so good. I'm using it with old school 2.5" spinning hard drives and it works well as a stripped RAID (using Apple disk utility). There is some play up and down with the drives, but they aren't going to slide out or become disconnected. Speeds are great, as good as you would expect with non SSD drives. I do wish it came with a power cord (hence the lack of a 5th star). If you do use this same setup, if the raid is not recognized when you boot, just use disk utility to repair disk and the raid mounts. It sounds scary, but it only takes 60 seconds and doesn't affect your data.

great unit. you can use the second thunderbolt connection ...
great unit. you can use the second thunderbolt connection for various items like a second monitor, usb splitter, extra hardrive, etc. it doesnt have to be another of the same unit.

Magic + Thunder
This is working like a charm — instead of buying huge LaCie external drives, I'm getting 2.5" SATA SSD's and spinning drives for a fraction of the cost, they take up no room, and handle 4K video editing without a hiccup.

A must for all 2013 Mac Pro owners
This is a must for every 2013 Mac Pro owner who works with media or music. I have all my sample libraries stored in SSDs connected to this and love how quiet it is. Great build quality and fan-less enclosure which is a godsend for a music studio.
